Deepika Padukone's Oscars 2023 speech is winning praise for- apart from other things- the star's authentic Desi accent.

Deepika Padukone gave Desis a proud moment with her graceful presence at the Oscars 2023, where she introduced ‘RRR’ song ‘Naatu Naatu’ which went on to win the award for the Best Original Song. Deepika introduced the song with a fun little speech where she called it a " total banger" and her immaculate outfit also won praises on Desi Twitter.

A phenomenon that has often been unfairly criticised- non-native English speakers consciously or unconsciously switching accents, also known as code-switching- was not a point of contention when it came to Deepika, since she stuck to her original accent throughout. Twitter has found it praiseworthy.

I just want to appreciate the fact that Deepika Padukone did not code switch and change her accent while presenting at the Oscar's— Farshꙮgar (@farshogar_) March 13, 2023

Deepika Padukone’s unapologetic indian accent was perhaps the most attractive thing about her at the Oscar’s last night. Not pandering to the west while gleaming confidence through her roots (& being so happy in the moment) is what makes her so divaesque. More power to you, woman— omair (@omairSTOP) March 13, 2023

I will always love Deepika Padukone for being authentic never putting on a fake accent and her laugh and that smile man…so in love with her #DeepikaAtOscars— Jenni (@Glitterycrazen) March 13, 2023

My heart can't take the pride and happiness I am feeling for Deepika. Flaunting your authentic accent, with a radiant smile and looking like an angel. You will always be famous DEEPIKA PADUKONE #DeepikaAtOscars pic.twitter.com/BOPiKZpbH0— Hold me like that Oscar Dp (@TarVampirehunt) March 13, 2023

Deepika Padukone was so charming as a presenter. No pretension, no fake accent and not a hint of it being her first time on that global stage. I can’t imagine any other Bollywood actor coming across as so effortless.— . (@TandooriCutlet) March 13, 2023

Deepika also teared up after composer MM Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose walked up to the stage to accept the Oscar. “An irresistibly catchy chorus, electrifying beats and killer dance moves to match have made this next song a global sensation… In addition to being sung in Telugu and illustrating the film’s anti-colonialist themes, it’s also a total banger," she said in part of her speech.

New Delhi:

Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli's RRR ruled the 95th Academy Awards in more than just one way. To begin with, it won the Best Original Song. Other than that, singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava performed the song live at the Oscars, which received a standing ovation from the audience. Oscars producer Raj Kapoor, in an interview, revealed that the film's lead actors Jr NTR and Ram Charan were initially supposed to perform at the Oscars too. However, they "did not feel comfortable performing the live number on stage," he revealed.

"Originally, the two leads were going to be the stars of the number alongside the singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava. The show was very instrumental in helping secure working visas for their team to be able to come to the US to be a part of the performance," Raj Kapoor said in an interview.

The Oscars producer added, "In late February, we were informed that Ram Charan and NT Rama Rao Jr would be attending the Oscars, but they did not feel comfortable performing the live number on stage. The change was brought on because of their other professional commitments and the limited amount of time to rehearse. The original number was workshopped and rehearsed for two months and was shot over a period of 15 days. The Naatu Naatu performance for the Oscars was rehearsed in Los Angeles with professional dancers for a total of 18 hours of rehearsal and one 90-minute camera blocking."

The Naatu Naatu live performance by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava at the Oscars, received a standing ovation from the audience.

Amid mass layoffs, US President advisory panel recommends extending grace period for H-1B workers | Mint

With thousands of employees including Indian have been laid off across tech giants including Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon, Twitter in the past couple of months have left many employees worried about their job security. The layoffs has affected the future of H1B visa holders as in a span of 60 days, they either need to find another company to sponsor their visas or leave the country.

Now, a major relief for H-1B visa holders has come as presidential advisory sub-committee has recommended the federal government to extend the grace period for thousands of retrenched H-1B workers from the existing 60 days to 180 days so that they have enough opportunities to find a new job or other alternatives.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise.

They are now struggling to find new employment within the stipulated 60-day period under their work visas following the termination of their employment to stay in the country.

Ajay Jain Bhutoria, member of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, said, “The immigration subcommittee recommends the Department of Homeland Security and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to extend the grace period for H-1B workers, who have lost their jobs, from 60 days to 180 days."

Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.

In his presentation, Bhutoria highlighted the significant challenges faced by H-1B workers laid off from their jobs. He said, The current 60-day grace period presents numerous hurdles, including finding a new job within a tight timeframe, complex paperwork for transferring H-1B status, and delays in processing at USCIS.

He added that this is forcing many H-1B workers to leave the country which could result in a loss of skilled labour for the United States.

In his presentation, Bhutoria, strongly advocated for the extension of the grace period, citing the need to support highly skilled tech employees who he said are essential to the economic growth of the United States.

The extension would also provide affected employees with more time to navigate the complex and time-consuming process of finding new employment opportunities and transferring their H-1B status, he said.

Members of the commission, recognising the importance of supporting and retaining highly skilled tech employees, supported the move.

Bhutoria's recommendation to extend the grace period for the H-1B workers is a critical step towards ensuring that highly skilled tech employees can continue to contribute to the economic growth of the United States without fear of losing their status.

The H-1B visa holders face significant consequences when they are laid off from their jobs. After termination, they have a 60-day grace period during which they must either leave the United States, seek a change of immigration status, or have another employer file an H-1B petition on their behalf. If they do not do so within 60 days, they are considered to be in violation of the terms of their non-immigrant visa.

However, if a new employer files a new H-1B petition for the visa holder within 60 days of a previous employer's termination, the change of employer petition will typically be granted even if there was a gap in the employee's H-1B status.

The workers encounter many barriers that make it difficult for them to complete all requirements for maintaining their status within the current 60-day grace period. The job market can be challenging, which is especially true for workers in specialised fields, he said.

Tech companies typically conduct four to five rounds of interviews, which take several weeks before a candidate is offered a job.

Even if an H-1B worker is able to find a new job within 60 days, the process of transferring their H-1B status can be time-consuming and complex given the significant amount of paperwork.

Additionally, based on delays happening at USCIS, this process can take longer than 60 days to complete. This can result in the loss of skilled labour for the United States as these workers may not be able to return unless they get a new H-1B, which may take years.

It is only a question of time before the companies’ economy transitions from a few months of slowdown to a boom period, which brings about a significant increase in commercial activities and opens up new opportunities for highly skilled tech employees to support the economic growth, Bhutoria argued.

Earlier, a survey report titled 2023 Immigration Trends published by Envoy Global had stated that there is a rise in demand to sponsor foreign talent in the US, however, immigration barriers are leading employers to relocate foreign national employees overseas and outsource jobs. US immigration barriers commonly cause employers to lose foreign talent. Last year, 82 percent of employers saw a foreign national employee forced to depart the US because they were unable to obtain or extend an employment-based visa. It also stated that 94 percent of companies would hire more foreign nationals if there were fewer immigration barriers in the US

Russian fighter jet hits American drone over Black Sea: US

A Russian fighter jet struck the propeller of a US surveillance drone over the Black Sea on Tuesday in a “brazen violation of international law,” causing American forces to bring down the unmanned aerial vehicle, the US said.

But Russia insisted its warplanes didn’t hit the MQ-9 Reaper drone. Instead, it said the drone manoeuvred sharply and crashed into the water following an encounter with Russian fighter jets that had been scrambled to intercept it near Crimea.

The incident, which added to Russia-US tensions over Moscow’s war in Ukraine, appeared to be the first time since the height of the Cold War that a US aircraft was brought down after an encounter with a Russian warplane.

US President Joe Biden was briefed on the incident by national security adviser Jake Sullivan, according to White House national security spokesman John Kirby. He added that US State Department officials would be speaking directly with their Russian counterparts and “expressing our concerns over this unsafe and unprofessional intercept.”

State Department spokesman Ned Price called it a “brazen violation of international law.” He said the US summoned the Russian ambassador to lodge a protest and the US ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, has made similar representations in Moscow.

    — The New York Times (@nytimes) March 14, 2023

The US European Command said two Russian Su-27 fighter jets intercepted the drone while it was operating within international airspace. It said one of the Russian fighters struck the propeller of the MQ-9, causing US forces to bring it down in international waters.

Prior to that, the Su-27s dumped fuel on the MQ-9 and flew in front of it several times in “a reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner,” the US European Command said in a statement from Stuttgart, Germany. “This incident demonstrates a lack of competence in addition to being unsafe and unprofessional,” it added.

US Air Force Gen James B. Hecker, commander of US Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa, said the MQ-9 aircraft was “conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9.” He added that “in fact, this unsafe and unprofessional act by the Russians nearly caused both aircraft to crash.”

Pentagon spokesman Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said the incident occurred at 7.03 am Central European time (0603 GMT; 11.30 am IST) over international waters, and well clear of Ukraine, after the Russian jets had flown in the vicinity of the drone for 30 to 40 minutes. There did not appear to be any communications between the aircraft before the collision, Ryder added.

    — AFP News Agency (@AFP) March 15, 2023

The MQ-9 includes a ground control station and satellite equipment and has a 20-meter wingspan. It is capable of carrying munitions, but Ryder would not say whether it was armed. The US had not recovered the crashed drone, US Air Forces-Europe said in a statement, and neither had Russia, Ryder said.

He said it appeared the Russian aircraft also was damaged in the collision, but the US has confirmed that it did land, although Ryder would not say where.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the US drone was flying over the Black Sea near Crimea and intruded in an area that was declared off limits by Russia as part of what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine, causing the military to scramble fighters to intercept it.

“As a result of a sharp manoeuvre, the MQ-9 drone went into unguided flight with a loss of altitude and crashed into the water,” it said. “The Russian fighters didn’t use their weapons, didn’t come into contact with the unmanned aerial vehicle, and they safely returned to their base.”

The Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, described the US drone flight as a “provocation” and argued that there was no reason for US military aircraft and warships to be near Russia’s borders.

Anatoly Antonov, the Russian Ambassador to the U.S., said his country wants “no confrontation” with the U.S. after a Russian fighter jet collided Tuesday with a large U.S. surveillance drone over the Black Sea. https://t.co/eahJg24Jay pic.twitter.com/5g4yU4jMjo

    — The Associated Press (@AP) March 14, 2023

Speaking after meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe Karen Donfried, Antonov insisted that the Russian warplanes didn’t hit the American drone or fire their weapons. He added that Moscow wants “pragmatic” ties with Washington, adding that “we don’t want any confrontation between the US and Russia.”

Moscow has repeatedly voiced concern about US intelligence flights close to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014 and illegally annexed. The Kremlin has charged that by providing weapons to Ukraine and sharing intelligence information with Kyiv, the US and its allies have effectively become engaged in the conflict.

Kirby emphasised that the incident wouldn’t deter the US from continuing its missions in the area.

“If the message is that they want to deter or dissuade us from flying, and operating in international airspace, over the Black Sea, then that message will fail,” Kirby said. “We’re going to continue to fly and operate in international airspace over international waters. The Black Sea belongs to no one nation.”

The US European Command said the incident followed a pattern of dangerous actions by Russian pilots while interacting with US and allied aircraft over international airspace, including over the Black Sea.

“These aggressive actions by Russian aircrew are dangerous and could lead to miscalculation and unintended escalation,” it warned.

Gen. David Berger, commandant of the Marine Corps, said this type of collision is his greatest concern, both in that part of Europe as well as in the Pacific. “Probably my biggest worry both there and in the Pacific is an aggressive Russia or China pilot or vessel captain, or something gets too close, doesn’t realise where they are, and causes a collision,” Berger said, in response to a question at a National Press Club event Tuesday.

As fighting continued in Ukraine, a Russian missile struck an apartment building Tuesday in the eastern city of Kramatorsk, killing at least one person and wounding nine others in one of the major urban strongholds the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video showing gaping holes in the façade of the low-rise building, which bore the brunt of the strike that damaged nine apartment blocks, a kindergarten, a bank branch and two cars, said regional Gov. Pavlo Kyrylenko.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking with workers at a helicopter factory in southern Siberia, again cast the conflict in Ukraine as an existential one for Russia.

“For us, it’s not a geopolitical task,” Putin said, “it’s the task of survival of Russian statehood and the creation of conditions for the future development of our country.” Russia had welcomed a Chinese peace proposal, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Kyiv’s refusal to talk leaves Moscow with only military options.

“We must achieve our goals,” Peskov told reporters. “Given the current stance of the Kyiv regime, now it’s only possible by military means.” The Russian onslaught has focused on the devastated eastern city of Bakhmut, where Kyiv’s troops have been fending off attacks for seven months and which has become a symbol of resistance, as well as a focal point of the war.

Zelenskyy discussed Bakhmut with the military brass and they were unanimous in their determination to face down the Russian onslaught, according to the presidential office.

“The defensive operation in (Bakhmut) is of paramount strategic importance to deterring the enemy. It is key for the stability of the defense of the entire front line,” said Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the commander in chief of Ukraine’s armed forces.
